Principles of UX motion design
The core principles behind effective interface motion: timing, easing, and building responsive animations that guide attention and feel intuitive.
Get the timing right and the interface feels fast, calm and clear. I help designers use motion with purpose, so every move earns its place.

I’m Justin Volz, a Senior UX Motion Designer at Google.
I design motion for products used by millions of people.
I care about motion that explains, guides and responds, so interfaces feel clear and a little delightful. Most of my work is motion design systems, interaction and transition design, prototyping in After Effects and Figma, and the specs that hand motion over to engineering.
I also run workshops and speak about motion in UX, at places like the University of Colorado Boulder, DDX Conference in Dubai and IxDF in Houston.
Each issue covers the best motion work I come across, what it means for the products we design, and my honest take on where it’s all heading. Three subjects keep coming back:
The core principles behind effective interface motion: timing, easing, and building responsive animations that guide attention and feel intuitive.
Practical ways to use animation to improve navigation, explain what’s happening, and add interaction and engagement to apps and websites.
How to use After Effects, Figma and more to create polished animation, plus best practices for implementing motion across platforms and devices.
